Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful night
That started when my computer
Decided it wanted to fight.

The programs were mighty annoying and,
The anti-virus brave and sure.
Five hours it seemed I wasted that day
Would my sanity endure, would it endure?

The windows update started getting rough,
The computer was almost tossed,
If not for $&@# media player,
The data was all lost, the data it got lost.

No Firefox, no Miro, no video to mp3 converter,
Not a single ripped DVD,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primitive as can be.

It seems like all I do here lately is complain about my technology messing up. But I promise this will be the last one (unless my stereo busts into flames).

A little while after the last catastrophe a decided that I would start installing a bunch of programs to try them out. After all if my computer screws up no matter what I do I might as well have fun. So after installing Knoppix for a safety net I went about getting JVC internet TV, some other internet TV, Miro, Google sketch up, Gifted motion, and Text to speech.
Text to speech could take any words on the screen and not only read them but save the reading meaning I could listen to books at work. At least that was the hope. It claimed it needed a special update from microsoft to work so I tried to update. It took a heck of a long time to do nothing. I even left it going for almost 8 hours and still it wasn't done so I canceled it. Everything seemed ok.

It was on the 7th that I decided I should rearrange my mp3 player since it was full of Christmas music. I plugged it in and my computer only gave me two options. It should give me more than that but I couldn't get it to do anything else. So I chose to sync my player with windows media player. Then a thing came up saying I needed to upgrade my WMP. So i tried to do that. That's when all hell broke loose. For some reason it wasn't updating right. It would say it was updating MP9 even though I have WMP11. But it would only update so much before it says error and tries again. It did this a few times before I stopped it and decided to go through Windows update. As it was going my anti-virus started going nuts saying it was a virus. At first I was denying access but then I thought it might just be a problem with the anti-virus so I let it through. When I tried to use the computer again it would only be on a few seconds before a warning came up saying virtual memory too low. No matter what I tried the darn thing wouldn't work.
So I had no choice but to wipe it clean again. But this time I was confidant that I could save whatever little information wasn't already backed up. So even though Ubuntu didn't work for me I gave Knoppix a try. It failed. It (like Ubuntu) thought my screen was bigger that it is so if there was anything along the bottom or right side that was helpful I couldn't see or get to it. What I could get to didn't do anything useful. At least all I lost was a few bookmarks and a picture or two. I'm hoping I don't need to buy a new laptop.

To coincide with this my TV messed up. I have had the TV fixed on 4 separate occasions. It would turn itself off and then struggle to get back on. The last time sparks had come out the back. But I liked it, it was a big screen and it had a built in channel guide. So after my replacement TV crapped out I decided to try getting it fixed again. Then on Christmas eve it turned itself off on it's own again. I don't want a fire hazard in my room so I looked around online for a brand new one (all of the others have been hand me downs). I found one for $299 at best buy that was 32 in and had a place for plugging my laptop into the back. I went to the store the saturday after Christmas and they were sold out. Will they get more in? Yes latter that day. Later my dad calls (he doesn't want to drive there for nothing) and they still don't have any. But they will get more on tues. at that price. I look online and see that it was a sale and it won't be. On sunday my mom makes us go to the best buy again to check and they don't have it then it's over to the kmart where they have a similar one for $399. Then it's on to walmart then another walmart and finally we end up at best buy again to get one that's similar but about $40 more. I buy it just to shut mom up. It works great. It's amazing how clear my computer screen look on it.

Now to the final and hopefully last tech issue. My camera. The one I've been using for years has a messed up battery compartment that has to be kept shut with tape and held a certain way or the batteries fall out. It also lacks a macro setting so I can't update [livejournal.com profile] gentle_john as much as I'd like. My parents bought me a new one several months ago but it drained batteries really quick and it fell into a lake. I tried to dry it out for about a day and for a few minutes it seemed ok. But it hasn't worked since. So after trying to get walmart.com to let me put a good camera into my cart I had to use my dad's computer to buy this It's water proof, drop proof, shake proof, and freeze proof. Plus it takes sound movies!

For those of you new around here I'm normally a lot more upbeat. It's just that I was hoping to save money and so far this year I've been spending like there's no tomorrow.
